Grades 6–8. During this unit students work to answer the question, "Where do natural hazards happen and how do we prepare for them?" Students first are presented with an anchoring phenomenon that focuses on the 2011 Great Sendai or Tohoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami that caused major loss of life and property in Japan. They then go on to use maps, graphs, physical models, videos, and simulations to explore tsunamis and to consider engineering design solutions and technologies to mitigate their effects.
